Translating to “Ruler” from the Aztec Nahuatl language, Tlatoani could refer to the rulers of tributary cities or the Mexica Capital itself. In the case of Tenochtitlan and the Aztec empire as a whole the ruler was referred to as ” Hueyi Tlatoani” which is roughly analogous to “Great ruler” or “Emperor.”
