Poland was, for a time, a kingdom during the medieval period. Following a period of instabillity and peasant uprisings known as the pagan reaction Poland suffered years of inneffectual and disinterested rules, foreign intereference, and even invasion from neighboring Kievan Rus.
The Monarchy would eventually be restored in the late 13th century, eventually being strengthened by Casimir III The Great.
