Onager, derived from the latin “Onagrum” also means “Wild Ass”, which of course relates to the animal species. This is because the kick of the war-machine as it released its payload resembled the kicking of an ass. This torsion powered catapult weapon would be used by the Romans from the 4th century to the 6th century.
